As 2024 approaches, the buzz in the cycling world is palpable, and for good reason. As an endurance coach based in Colorado, I’m thrilled to be at the forefront of this season’s preparations. We’re not just talking about any ordinary cycling season; the upcoming year is poised to be a groundbreaking one, with events that promise to push both athletes and coaches to new heights.

A Debut in Adelaide: Embracing the New Challenges

The season’s kick-off with the Para Cycling Road World Cup in Adelaide, Australia, in conjunction with the Tour Down Under, marks a significant milestone. This isn’t just another race on the calendar; it’s an emblem of the sport’s growing global appeal and the inclusivity that cycling fosters. For me personally, it’s an exhilarating first visit to Australia – a chance to experience the cycling haven of the Southern Hemisphere.

What makes Adelaide’s event particularly intriguing is the strategic importance it holds. Athletes are not just racing for the podium; they’re also vying for crucial points that could secure their slots for the Paris games. This added layer of competition, eight months before the main event, is sure to bring an extra edge to the races.

Coaching Through the Anticipation

As a coach, this extended season presents both challenges and opportunities. My approach focuses on not just physical training but also mental preparedness. It’s about helping athletes maintain peak performance while navigating a longer-than-usual competitive period. We’re looking at tailored training schedules, psychological support, and strategic race planning.

The Epic Challenge: Mastering The Cape Epic

Post-Australia, it’s a swift transition back home to ramp up preparations for the Godfather of mountain bike stage races – The Cape Epic. Renowned as one of the most demanding races in the world, The Epic tests every facet of a rider’s skill and endurance. It’s a grueling seven-day journey across South Africa’s rugged terrain, demanding not just physical strength but strategic acumen and mental resilience.

My role as a coach is to ensure that each athlete is not only physically ready but also mentally equipped to tackle such a relentless challenge. We focus on endurance training, technical skills, and recovery strategies. It’s about building a comprehensive toolkit that enables riders to perform consistently over seven demanding days.

Looking Ahead: A Season of Growth

As we gear up for these monumental events, my focus remains steadfast on holistic development. It’s not just about crossing the finish line; it’s about the journey – the growth, the setbacks, the triumphs, and the lessons learned.

2024 is set to be a year of remarkable achievements and unforgettable experiences. From the sun-drenched roads of Adelaide to the rugged trails of Cape Town, it’s a season that promises to be as rewarding as it is challenging. For me and my athletes, it’s an opportunity to push the boundaries, to grow, and to revel in the sheer joy of the sport.
